Ethan Oakley, a native of North Carolina, is proud to represent his home state on his journey to the national championships. Currently ranked #18 nationally at 133 lbs. by FloWrestling, a top source for college wrestling rankings, Ethan is entering the second half of his senior season at the University of North Carolina (UNC) with his sights set on two major milestones: the ACC Championships and the NCAA Tournament.

A Wrestling Journey Rooted in Family

Ethan’s wrestling journey began in middle school, a family endeavor sparked by his brother’s decision to try out for the wrestling team. This marked how Ethan Oakley started wrestling and found his passion for the sport. “My parents made my brother do a sport in middle school, he chose to try out for the wrestling team in 8th grade, and I also decided to try wrestling. We both loved it, and that’s how we started getting into club wrestling,” Ethan recalls. This foundation paved the way for a career shaped by hard work, determination, and unforgettable moments—like winning state championships alongside his brother during Ethan’s freshman year of high school. “My freshman year state finals, my brother was a senior, and we both won the state tournament that year. My dad also was the coach and coached both of us to state titles,” he shares.

From Appalachian State to UNC

Ethan’s transition to collegiate wrestling began at Appalachian State, where he started his college career. Fueled by his love for the sport and a goal set early in high school to earn a scholarship and compete at the next level, he eventually transferred to UNC. Choosing UNC and joining the UNC wrestling program was a decision close to his heart. “I have always loved the University of North Carolina, and I take pride in being born and raised in North Carolina,” he says. Now, as a senior representing his home state on the national stage, Ethan is a testament to North Carolina wrestling’s growing presence and potential.

The Grind of a Collegiate Wrestler

Balancing life as a collegiate wrestler is no small feat. Ethan’s typical day includes a morning lift, classes throughout the day, and practice at 3 p.m. The grind is relentless, and the transition from high school to college wrestling posed its own set of challenges. “The consistent lift schedule was hard for me because I did not lift in high school. Also, just adjusting to the toughness of the competition in the room,” Ethan reflects. But it’s clear that the challenges have only sharpened his resolve.

Chasing Postseason Glory

Now, as Ethan enters the critical final stretch of his collegiate career, his focus is clear. “The goal for the season is to be an ACC Champion and then become an NCAA Champion,” he declares. With the ACC Championships and NCAA Tournament just around the corner, Ethan’s journey embodies the dedication and determination that define North Carolina wrestling.
